Travel: on land, over water, in the air

Nan Shepherd's mountain climbing, Walt Whitman's Song of the Open Road, Tagore's Journey Home feature alongside Kraftwerk and the bicycle parade from Jean Coulthard's ballet score.

Katherine Kelly and Clive Hayward read from poetry and prose about travelling by road, sea and air including passages from the diaries of Dorothy Wordsworth, the thoughts of aviator Amelia Earhart, and cyclist Dervla Murphy, poetry from Walt Whitman, Imtiaz Dharker and Michael Donaghy, and descriptions of bike riding from HG Wells and Julian Barnes. The music includes Gustav Holst's Moorside Suite and George Dyson's Four Songs for Sailors, Johnny Cash singing I've been everywhere, Oliver Davis's composition Airborne Dances II, Laurie Anderson's piece To circle the world and her collaboration with the Kronos Quartet Riding Bicycles Through the Muddy Streets. We also hear Sana Masasama reading from her piece Why do I travel? and Stuart Maconie reading from Country Walking Magazine.
