Peru

Episode 6 of 7

Jonny Dymond and a panel of Peruvian politicians and activists debate questions from an audience in Lima. What can save Peru from its crisis of crime?

This century, Peru has seen seven of its Presidents jailed whilst in office. The president had been serving at the whim of congress, and she was removed from office on the 9th October, two days after this debate. Her successor has a lot on their plate: rising murder rates, illegal mining, narco trading and a wave of extortion that has brought transport workers out on strike. Trust in the government is at an all-time low. What can the country do to turn the tide? Jonny Dymond and a political panel debate questions from a public audience in Lima.

The Panel:
Mercedes Araoz: Former Prime Minister of Peru, Professor of International Economy, University of the Pacific.
Sigrid Bazán: Congresswoman (Nuevo Perú), former President of the Labour Commission.
Tarcila Rivera Zea: Founder of the Centre for Indigenous Cultures of Peru, former member of the UN Permanent Forum of Indigenous Issues.
Diana Gonzales: Congresswoman (Avanza País), Vice Chair of the Energy and Mines Committee.
