Episode 9

Episode 9 of 10

An accountant funds a lavish lifestyle by cheating both private clients and the NHS out of more than £1.3 million. Plus a benefits cheat who faked a disability to claim £71,000.

An accountant takes on three different full-time jobs with the NHS – and manages to get paid for all of them, even though he’s barely carrying out the work of one. Each is well paid in its own right, and he hasn’t declared that he’s working three at the same time. In fact, he’s barely working one, as he’s using the money to fund a luxury lifestyle of London hotels and extravagant days out. Investigators also discover the accountant has been taking on private clients and draining their bank accounts into his own. He’s even accused of romance fraud.

In another case, undercover work exposes a benefit cheat’s lies. A woman has been claiming disability living allowance because she says she has multiple sclerosis. But after a tip-off, investigators from the Department for Work and Pensions launch a surveillance operation. She’s seen walking normally with no apparent disability. And her social media account shows a video of her on a zip wire. Investigators call her in for questioning.
