Sontag On Photography

4 Extra Debut. Is a photograph more accurate than a painting? Is photography art? Susan Sontag shares her views with Philip French. From 1978.

Susan Sontag claimed to be addicted to photographs - cutting them out of newspapers and magazines, putting them on her walls and going to exhibitions.

Photography also informed her writing - but novelist and critic didn't take pictures herself.

Her best selling book of essays 'On Photography', published in 1977, is about our attitudes towards experience and reality.

In conversation with Philip French, Susan discusses issues raised in her book.

Producer: Philip French
