Episode 3

1788: When war and revolution change the Vienna that made Mozart a superstar, he spirals into debt and depression. To secure his family’s future, he must resolve to put them first.

Following his father's death, Mozart's music takes on a new level of intensity and emotional depth as he grapples with the numerous losses he has experienced in his short life. His opera Don Giovanni, which follows the success of The Marriage of Figaro, is marked by its unparalleled drama and sophistication - but the Viennese audience, including the emperor, find the music too intense.

The outbreak of the Austro-Turkish War in 1788 further fractures the Viennese music scene, leaving Mozart in a precarious position. He is desperate to support his family in the face of an uncaring aristocracy that is tightening its purse strings, leaving freelancers like him out in the cold. The future that had once seemed secure now appears uncertain.
