The Gateshead meeting is the first in the 2021 Diamond League and also the beginning of Asher-Smith’s journey towards what she hopes will be a golden summer at the Tokyo Games.

With Jamaican duo Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah, who between them have won the last three Olympic 100m titles, also heading to the north east of England, it is far from a soft launch for Asher-Smith.

The all-star cast continues with the likes of Britain’s indoor and outdoor European middle-distance gold medallist Laura Muir and Sweden’s precocious pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis.
