The Leprosy Mission
The Leprosy Mission is a global charity leading the fight against leprosy in 28 countries. We work with people affected by leprosy around the world, providing expert healthcare and holistic support to help them break the cycle of disease and poverty. But we need you to make this possible. Our Radio 4 Appeal focusses on Mozambique and your gift will be matched by the UK government until 24 April 2021.
Leprosy: a 21st century disease

Many people don’t realise that leprosy still exists, but 200,000 new cases are reported by the World Health Organization every year. Leprosy is easily curable but, without treatment, it damages nerves and robs people of the feeling in their hands and feet. Ulcers develop leading to amputation and disability. The physical effects are devastating, and the stigma destroys families and tears communities apart.
Darcey Bussell in Mozambique

Darcey Bussell met people affected by leprosy like Maria in Mozambique. Maria was abandoned by her husband and she thought she would be thrown out of her community, all because she had leprosy. But a Leprosy mission worker gave Maria the antibiotics that cured her leprosy and helped her neighbours not to fear this disease. Now Maria travels to remote communities, teaching everyone that leprosy can be cured.
Double your donation

It cost just £24 to cure Maria of leprosy and set her on the path to a completely different future. You can help to cure someone like her and give them the chance to live free from disability and rejection.
