In June 2020, after months of increasingly violent protests in Hong Kong, Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law. Critics say it effectively curtails protest and freedom of speech - China has said it will return stability. In response, the UK has introduced a new visa that will give 70% of its former colony's population - 5.4m people - the right to live in the UK, and eventually become citizens. Many activists now face an agonising choice - to stay or to go.
