Emin/Munch: Between The Clock and The Bed

A look at the affinities between Edvard Munch and Tracey Emin, exploring the unexpected ways that the Norwegian expressionist resonates with one of Britain's pre-eminent artists.

The Loneliness Of The Soul, a new exhibition at London's Royal Academy, showcased the work of British artist Tracey Emin, alongside paintings by her hero the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Munch's work has long inspired Emin, from her early video piece Homage To Edvard Munch and All My Dead Children to her monumental new nine-metre high bronze sculpture, The Mother, set to be installed outside Oslo's new Munch Museum. Today, the majority of Emin's time is spent painting. This documentary charts the affinities between Munch's art and Emin's art almost a hundred years later, exploring the many unexpected ways that this godfather of expressionism resonates with one of Britain's pre-eminent living artists. Alongside Emin's voice, we hear from art historians and curators in Norway, showing the innovations in printmaking and sculpture which Munch pioneered, alongside his more well-known painting work. We see the home where Munch created his work, still perfectly preserved and find out more about his photographic and film work, media not normally associated with the artist, but ones in which there are clear correspondences with Emin's work.
