Following an industrial accident at one of their building sites, the Laurent family from Calais are joined by 12-year-old Eve, the estranged daughter of Pierre from his first marriage, as her mother lies close to death in hospital.

As Eve tries to settle in, her grandfather George, distracted by the bickering of his daughter Anne and her son Thomas, sees an opportunity for escape thanks to the arrival of the newcomer.
