Venus vs Davenport, Evert vs Navratilova

Today’s trip to the Wimbledon archives features two finals involving four great American champions: Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.

Today’s trip to the Wimbledon archives features two finals involving four great American champions: Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.

The rivalry between Navratilova and Evert is one of the greatest in tennis – they met five times in Wimbledon singles finals, the first coming in 1978, when baseliner Evert is looking for her third title at the All England Club, while Navratilova is planning to serve and volley her way to a first success.

The 2005 final between Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport is also a classic. Davenport comes into the match as the world number one but hasn’t won a Grand Slam for five years. Williams has also endured a major title drought as she has battled with recurrent injury. What follows is a dramatic encounter that goes the distance.
