Motor Neurone Disease Association
Matthew Bannister makes the Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which focuses on improving care for people with motor neurone disease (MND), funding and promoting research into the causes of and effective treatments for the disease, and campaigning and raising awareness so the needs of people with MND are recognised and addressed by wider society.
The support

Our presenter Matthew describes his mum Olga as ‘one of life’s carers’. After her husband’s death from motor neurone disease, Olga became an MND Association volunteer, supporting people with MND for 17 years. Her dedication earned her a British Empire Medal, awarded just before she died in 2018.
The research

Thousands of scientists around the world are working to pinpoint the causes of MND and effective treatments. The MND Association helps fund that vital work with a portfolio of 83 grants totaling £14 million, thanks to the generous support of donors.
The future

John Albon is one of the people with MND involved in Professor Leigh’s trial of Interleukin-2, which is supported by the MND Association. Five days a month John has an injection of what could be the drug, or a placebo. He says: “Signing up was a no-brainer. I’m an ordinary guy. But I want to help find a cure.”
