Sunday Night is Motown Night

Trevor Nelson celebrates 60 years of the Motown sound at Hackney Empire with the BBC Concert Orchestra and guest singers Tommy Blaize, Tony Momrelle, and Heather Small.

In a concert recorded as part of Radio 2's 2019 Motown season, Trevor Nelson celebrates 60 years of the Motown sound at Hackney Empire with the BBC Concert Orchestra led by arranger Malcolm Edmonstone and featuring guest singers Tommy Blaize, Tony Momrelle, and Heather Small.

Together they perform many of Motown's greatest hits, including 'igned Sealed Delivered, Being With You, Isn't She Lovely, You Can't Hurry Love, Dancing in the Street, Trouble Man, What's Going On, and Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

During the interval, Beverley Knight uncovers the strange tale of the Electronium, an almost forgotten chapter in the story of Motown Records. This was the brainchild of inventor Raymond Scott and was the futuristic composing machine that he secretly developed throughout the 1970s with the support of Motown supremo Berry Gordy as they attempted to redefine the term 'hit factory' in a way that few could have imagined.
