Harriet Gilbert talks to Indian writer Anuradha Roy about her much-loved debut novel 'An Atlas of Impossible Longing'.

The family saga set in Bengal was rejected 16 times before it was published in 2008. Anuradha discusses her inspiration, characterisation, the caste system and India's historic mistreatment of widows, who have become a tragic motif in Bengali literature.
