Charlie takes Adam, a synthetic human, to his home to live and introduces him to his friend, Miranda. Read by Anton Lesser.

Ian McEwan's novel reimagines life and times in the 1980s.

Against a backdrop of Britain's loss of the Falkland Islands and mounting social unrest, Charlie invites Adam into his modest London home and introduces him to Miranda, a resident upstairs.

Adam is a synthetic human and both neighbours decide to 'shape' his personality for everyday use. Others are doing it too, with an Adam or with an Eve.
