1. Introduction

4 Extra Debut. Charlie takes Adam, a synthetic human, to his home to live and introduces him to his friend, Miranda. Read by Anton Lesser.

Ian McEwan's novel reimagines life and times in the 1980s.

Read by Anton Lesser.

Against a backdrop of Britain's loss of the Falkland Islands and mounting social unrest, Charlie invites Adam into his modest London home and introduces him to Miranda, a resident upstairs.

Adam is a synthetic human and both neighbours decide to 'shape' his personality for everyday use.

Others are doing it too, with an Adam or with an Eve.
