Little Muspratt by Penelope Mortimer

A genteel widow moves to a new village where she hopes to befriend a famous novelist. Stars Mary Wimbush and Jill Balcon.

Phyllis Muspratt is the epitome of all that Rebecca despises: a genteel little widow who can't manage without a man to do the odd jobs about the house.

She’s pathetically eager to make friends - and Rebecca manages to reduce her to tears on their first meeting.

But she's a near neighbour and can't be ignored.

Penelope Mortimer's novel The Handyman, first published in 1984.
