Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I’m not a convinced follower of social media but I do accept I cannot bury my head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist.

I’ve decided instead to be disciplined; to recognise what’s good; make the best of it, and to resist the temptation to waste time and energy on what is useless.

I spend a little time each day culling inspirational thoughts from twitter and I occasionally re-tweet the best ones. I believe God makes the best social media for his purposes too.

Allow me to share a few helpful thoughts God sent me last week.

“There’s much in life we can’t control so don’t upset yourself trying to.” That’s true. I can’t control what happens to me but I can choose how to react.

“Happiness comes by letting go of what you think your life is supposed to be like and appreciating what you have.” It has taken me until now to realise that it’s my expectations which makes me unhappy not life itself.

“Nobody’s perfect and you will never be perfect either. Accept yourself as you are and learn to love your gifts AND your faults.” That encouraging advice comes straight from the bible.

“Do more, worry less.” I wish I could really live that advice. Worry is a waste of time but I still worry about what I do and who I might offend. I should recognise by now that worry never changes the outcome.

“Be humble when life is good, be strong in the dark times and trust in God and your own ability in between times.” It’s easy to let success go to our heads and to let failure destroy ; easy but wrong - how we handle both shows what we’re made of.

“When it comes to money earn it, save it and keep enough for the inevitable rainy day.”

Wise people know how to avoid spending money they don’t have, buying things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t know.

I now realise that when life doesn’t add up, I should begin subtracting.

But it was a thought straight from the Bible which summed up everything: “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Ps 34). And that’s what I call wisdom.
