They talk about life, nature, religion - everything but their feelings about Sophia's mother's death and their love for one another.

Tove Jansson's wonderfully humane and atmospheric book is dramatised by the poet and playwright Amanda Dalton from the translation by Thomas Teal.

Sophia Jansson, the real-life model for Sophia and niece of Tove, narrates this radio adaptation .

Her own mother, Signe Hammarsten-Jansson informed the character of the grandmother.
