Piers Bishop tells the story of Sir Nigel Gresley’s 1938 ‘Mallard’ steam engine speed record that still stands today. From 1988.

On 3rd July 1938, Sir Nigel Gresley’s blue streamlined ‘Mallard’ broke the world speed record for railway steam engines.

It reached an incredible 126mph - a record which still stands today.

Piers Bishop tells of the record attempt and traces the rivalry between two great railway engineers back in the golden age of steam.
