Toby calls at Lower Loxley unannounced, which doesn't impress Elizabeth. Whilst acknowledging it's none of her business, she makes it clear to him that she's not happy with the way he's treated Pip. Seeing Toby's contrition, she softens enough for him to share his concerns over his current arrangement with Pip. He feels like they're slipping back into their bad old ways; he doesn't know what Pip wants. Elizabeth asks quietly if he knows what he wants. In reply Toby asserts he doesn't want them to hurt each other all over again. Elizabeth thinks that's a good place to start. Toby and Pip go for a walk to thrash it out. They agree the no-commitment thing isn't working, and that it's nobody's fault. Vowing to return to just being friends, they shake on it.
Lilian, Peggy and Christine have turned out to see the installation of the new women's changing room at the cricket club. Lilian's evasive when asked about wedding invitations and changes the subject. They chat on, and Christine talks excitedly about the Rhine cruise she won at the Hunt Ball, donated by Melling Equestrian. Lilian feels uneasy when Christine points out she doesn't have any details yet. She feels even worse when Christine divulges she invested quite a lot of money in the racecourse.
