Lilian chooses her side, and can Elizabeth see history repeating?

At the Dower House Lilian cobbles together a cooked breakfast at James' request. He points out he's under a lot of stress with his and Leonie's troubles. He's unimpressed by the state of the bathroom - Lilian still hasn't found a replacement builder. And he'll need a lift into Borchester later to buy more clothes for his stay.

Outside the shop Lilian runs into Lynda. They agree that the break-up was a terrible pity, but clash over the question of blame. Lynda suggests James' behaviour is down to poor parenting. Lilian counters that childless Lynda is not in a position to comment. They part on bad terms.

Elizabeth is worried that Freddie is making the same mistakes she did at his age. Nigel would be able deal with it all so much better - it was him who put her onto the right path. Freddie has no regrets about going to the festival and Lily twigs the weekend's significance for her twin. Elizabeth tries not to be angry - she just wants to understand. Freddie says he had an epiphany there: there is much more to life than exams - look at his dad. Elizabeth stresses that he will soon have big responsibilities, she won't let him abandon his education.
