Miranda makes herself clear, and Toby arrives just in time.

Lilian and Shula contemplate Kirsty and Tom's loss. They're interrupted by Miranda, who's keen join Lilian on her hack. While out on horseback, Miranda announces that she knows about Lilian and Justin. She remarks spitefully that Lilian isn't the first; that Justin usually goes for younger; that his tastes are now much less discerning. She warns Lilian off, and then rides away. Later, Lilian relays the details to Shula. She admits it's been fun, but she didn't think this would be how the affair would end. Shula comments drily that she won't miss Miranda's manner.

Harrison asks Pip about joining the cricket team. Ruth's all for it, while Pip isn't sure. She's eventually persuaded but she can't join in training until calving has finished. Harrison asks them to keep it under their hats until he gets the club's approval.

In a packed Bull, Pip and Toby are joined by tipsy Lilian who's in need of another gin. Pip needs to get back for calving and Toby goes with her. But he has limited staying power and returns to the pub, where Lilian regales the assembled throng with drunken waffling about fragile hearts. Returning later to Brookfield, Toby finds Pip struggling with a difficult calving and pitches in to help under her instruction. He's impressed. They share a laugh over Lilian's antics. Toby reckons she's not enjoying life very much at all at the moment.
