As the first gas from the Laggan-Tormore field begins flowing to the mainland through a new plant in Shetland, Gillian Marles, hears of the development. In challenging conditions, thousands of workers were employed in the construction. But with oil and gas prices low, is this a last fling for the North or start of a new phase? Also as global stock markets remain gripped in a state of panic, investors rush to buy gold.
