Nico Rosberg roared to pole 12 months ago, his ninth of the season, in windy Texan conditions. He was almost four-tenths faster than his Mercedes team-mate and World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton, who up until that point had been the dominant driver in practice. Valtteri Bottas qualified third in his Williams whilst Jenson Button was seventh, but would eventually be penalised five places after changing his gearbox.
