World War One Special
In a special episode from the Somme battlefields, Fiona Bruce and a small group of experts meet families bringing stories of courage and humanity in wartime.
In the second Antiques Roadshow special from the Somme battlefields, Fiona Bruce and a small group of experts meet families bringing poignant stories of courage and humanity in wartime.
Letters, photographs, paintings and everyday family items provide an intimate and revealing insight into the events of World War I and their impact on a generation.
Included in this episode is the remarkable story of the footballer of Loos who is said to have kicked a ball to lead an advance in to enemy lines. We hear the account of one of the first nurses to have gone to war, who served alongside Edith Cavell. And we meet a German soldier's grandson who has carefully assembled all of the objects taken to the trenches where his relative Gottfried died, including a heartbreaking letter to be read in the event of his death.
Fiona Bruce also tells the story of her great-grandfather, who fought at the Somme and was eventually killed at Ypres.
