Benefit delays and distress
Personal Independence Payment is a new benefit designed – says the UK Government – to ensure that welfare spending on the sick and disabled is targeted at those most in need.
But the roll-out of the new payments has been blighted by long delays in the face-to-face assessment that now determines whether a claim is allowed.
Ministers claim they are on course to reduce that wait by the end of the year.
But organisations working with PIP claimants are sceptical and want a pause while the system is sorted out properly.
