Nicola Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon looks likely to become the next leader of the Scottish National Party. She joined the SNP as a teenager and this summer she was the leading female voice for a Yes vote in the referendum for Scottish independence. If elected she will become the third woman, leading one of the main parties in Scotland along with the Conservatives’ Ruth Davidson and Labour’s Johann Lamont. Janni talks to Nicola Sturgeon about her ambitions for Scotland and what she would do to look after the interests of a country that rejected independence last month.

Should the way courts handle historic sex crimes be reformed?

In the next part of series into historic sexual abuse and assault, we look at the court process for this type of crime. Last year, following the number of high-profile court cases relating to sexual offences, the outgoing Lord Chief Justice said there may be a case to end the way in which rape and other sex crimes witnesses currently give evidence. New measures could include giving video evidence and closing courts to the public. Liz Dux is a solicitor who has represented Jimmy Savile victims and believes that the courts could do more to protect vulnerable witnesses. She joins Jenni, along with Sally O’Neill QC, a barrister who specialises in very serious violent and sexual crime and murder, to discuss whether our justice system ensures fair outcomes for historic sex crimes.

Emma Chicester Clark's Plumdog

Emma Chicester Clark writes and illustrates her own picture books including the series about Blue Kangaroo and Melrose and Croc. She also illustrates many other authors’ work including Michael Morpurgo, Martin Waddell, Colin MacNaughton and Geraldine McCaughrean. Most importantly, she illustrates and pretends not to write Plum’s diary. Plum is Emma’s dog and in 2012 Emma started a blog about the day to day life of Plum. The book, Plumdog, has now been published and Emma joins Jenni in the studio.
