The Role of Women in British Asian Communities

The sexual abuse and exploitation of 1400 girls, mainly white, in Rotherham by men predominantly of Pakistani origin has caused shock and outrage. Last week’s report lists systemic failings on the part of the police and the council as well as others. How important was the role of women among British-Pakistanis in stopping more people speaking out about the abuse? What can be done to give British-Pakistani women a louder voice?

Han-Na Chang

The cellist and conductor Han-Na Chang will take up the baton on Sunday at the BBC Proms to conduct the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. She was born in South Korea and, age 11, she was taken under the wing of the renowned Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich after she won his International Cello Competition. She's performed around the world and she's released numerous bestselling albums. She joins Jenni to talk about why she's putting her accomplished career as a world class cellist aside and rebranding herself as a conductor.

Friends With Ex Boyfriend's New Partner

After a relationship has ended and your ex has moved on to someone new, how do you react to their new partner? With feelings of bitter resentment, a desire to blank that woman from your mind, or a need to just let it go? Or have you perhaps decided to befriend that new woman? Suzy Miller did just that when she became friends with her ex partner’s new wife. As did journalist Daisy Buchanan, who was devastated to split from her boyfriend, but then discovered she got on even better with his new girlfriend than she ever did with him. So what’s it like to make friends with an ex’s new partner? Is it an act of madness, as some might say, or a source of resolution and a new best friend?

Calling Someone Out for Groping

Have you ever been groped? How did you, or how would you, respond? Last week a woman at Notting Hill Carnival in West London was left needing hospital treatment after she was physically attacked by a man she challenged for sexually assaulted her. So should you speak out, or are you in danger of making a bad situation worse? And with high-profile women like Jennifer Lawrence being told they are at fault after their intimate photos were stolen and published online, is there a wider issue of victim-blaming when it comes to women’s bodies? Jenni is joined by Everyday Sexism’s Laura Bates and columnist Rosamund Urwin.

Jeanette Winterson

Jeanette Winterson’s 1985 novel, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, is a semi-autobiographical account of coming of age as a lesbian and a writer, interwoven with elements of the mythical and the fantastic. It tells the story of a young girl discovering her sexuality, and the beginning of her search to be herself. Jeanette Winterson talks to Jenni Murray about her ground breaking novel and its place in women’s writing almost thirty years after its publication.

Introducing a New Sibling to the Family

Lauren Child, creator of ‘Charlie and Lola’, has written and illustrated a new picture book called ‘The New Small Person’ about introducing a new sibling to the family. The book is about a small boy called Elmore Green, whose happy life is disrupted by the arrival of a little brother. Lauren joins Jenni to discuss the inspiration behind her new book and why she believes more children’s books should depict characters who are not white. Jenni is also joined by Dr Alison Pike, a reader in psychology at the University of Sussex, who specialises in siblings, to discuss the best way to introduce baby number two and how to manage sibling rivalry.

Cook the Perfect... Barnsley Chop

Cook the Perfect... Barnsley Chop

British chef Tom Kerridge has become a familiar figure on our TV screens, appearing on shows such as The Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen, Food and Drink and The Great British Food Revival. His gastropub The Hand & Flowers appears in the Good Food Guide top 50 and is the first pub in the UK to hold two Michelin stars.

But Tom had humble beginnings and learnt to cook out of necessity - as a latchkey kid brought up by a single mum in Gloucestershire he often had to cook tea for his little brother. In his new book, Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes, he puts his own twist on well-known classic dishes. He joins Jenni to cook the perfect Barnsley chop and talk about how he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 18.

Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes is published by Bloomsbury and his book will be accompanied by a BBC Two series in the autumn.
