North Eastern Nigeria: Crimes Against Children

It’s five months since almost 300 girls were taken from their school in Chibok in north eastern Nigeria, by the violent Islamist group Boko Haram. Despite international efforts, and vigorous campaigning by Nigerian women’s groups under the hashtag Bring Back Our Girls, no one knows where they are, or if they are safe. Now a new report by the organisation WatchList on Children and Armed Conflict, suggests abduction is widespread in the northeast of the country – also rape, violence, and forced recruitment. Woman’s Hour talks to the report author Janine Morna, and Nigerian women’s rights activist Saudatu Mahdi, part of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign.

Han-Na Chang

The cellist and conductor Han-Na Chang will take up the baton on Sunday at the BBC Proms to conduct the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. She was born in South Korea and, age 11, she was taken under the wing of the renowned Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich after she won his International Cello Competition. She's performed around the world and she's released numerous bestselling albums. She joins Jenni to talk about why she's putting her accomplished career as a world class cellist aside and rebranding herself as a conductor.

Cook the Perfect... Barnsley Chop

Cook the Perfect... Barnsley Chop

British chef Tom Kerridge has become a familiar figure on our TV screens, appearing on shows such as The Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen, Food and Drink and The Great British Food Revival. His gastropub The Hand & Flowers appears in the Good Food Guide top 50 and is the first pub in the UK to hold two Michelin stars.

But Tom had humble beginnings and learnt to cook out of necessity - as a latchkey kid brought up by a single mum in Gloucestershire he often had to cook tea for his little brother. In his new book, Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes, he puts his own twist on well-known classic dishes. He joins Jenni to cook the perfect Barnsley chop and talk about how he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 18.

Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes is published by Bloomsbury and his book will be accompanied by a BBC Two series in the autumn.

Introducing a New Sibling to the Family

Lauren Child, creator of ‘Charlie and Lola’, has written and illustrated a new picture book called ‘The New Small Person’ about introducing a new sibling to the family. The book is about a small boy called Elmore Green, whose happy life is disrupted by the arrival of a little brother. Lauren joins Jenni to discuss the inspiration behind her new book and why she believes more children’s books should depict characters who are not white. Jenni is also joined by Dr Alison Pike, a reader in psychology at the University of Sussex, who specialises in siblings, to discuss the best way to introduce baby number two and how to manage sibling rivalry.
