Last year the players had to deal with baking-hot sun and a testing wind on day three and the overnight leader Miguel Angel Jimenez saw his title bid falter as he struck a third-round 77.
England's Lee Westwood put himself in pole position after closing on three under par to take a two-shot lead into the final day, while eventual winner Phil Mickelson was yet to make his move as he finished four shots further back.
