Pause For Thought: Archbishop John Sentamu

Pause For Thought
When you arrive in a new place, some images remain with you for ever. When I arrived in this country in 1974, I saw, in a friend’s home, a poster of a newborn giraffe with its legs all tangled up, and still with a lot of growing left to do. The caption read, “Please be patient with me, God hasn’t finished with me yet”. I was so transfixed by it that my friend gave it to me.
Now, whenever I get myself into a tizz - feeling that I haven’t lived up to my own expectations, let alone God’s – the picture of that baby giraffe imprinted on my memory is a great source of encouragement, telling me that I need to be patient with myself and with other people, because God has not finished with us yet.
For the best is yet to be.
Images. In my recent visit to All Saints’ Cathedral, Cairo, one image there stayed with me: the picture of a toddler, and the caption: “My name is Today: today I need to eat, today I need to play, today I need care, today I need love, give me hope today for a brighter tomorrow.”
Those words are now constantly before me, inviting me to see not only the beauty of that child’s face, but also the challenge of the message itself: My name is Today.
During this time of Advent, we look forward with hope to the coming of a new joyful Today, when love comes down at Christmas, with the birth of Christ.
Sadly, in this beautiful world, there are still many children whose name is ‘Today’ - lacking in love, warmth, care, food, and fun.
In a haunting song by Annie Lennox, Universal Child, she sings:
How many mountains must you face before you learn to climb?...
I see the tracks of ev'ry tear that ran right down your face.
I see the hurt, I see the pain, I see the human race.
I couldn’t put it any better than Annie Lennox – so let us listen to her.
