Stevie Nicks; Women in Rwandan elections; Infertility funding

Stevie Nicks on her world tour with Fleetwood Mac, what elections in Rwanda mean for women, and should infertility treatment be funded by the NHS? Presented by Jane Garvey.

Stevie Nicks on her world tour with Fleetwood Mac and being reunited on stage with bandmate Christine McVie. Rwanda leads the world in the percentage of women in its parliament. As the country goes to the polls, we ask whether women might maintain their hold and how successful they are in influencing government policy. Columnist Cristina Odone and Claire Lewis Jones of Infertility Network UK discuss the funding of fertility treatment ahead of Radio 4's Costing the NHS programme. Why writer Al Smith decided to base this week's drama, Life in the Freezer, on the preparations of his mother for her death from ovarian cancer.

Veil

As you may have heard Jeremy Browne, a Lib Dem Home Office minister has called for a national debate on whether Muslim girls and young women should be banned from wearing full face veils in public places such as schools. Today a judge in London will decide whether a young woman’s demand to be able to wear her veil in court when her trial starts. On the phone we have Shaista Gohir, Chair of the Muslim Women’s Network.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks has been called “the ultimate rock goddess,” and now at 65 is certainly not about to retire from the role. Reunited with Fleetwood Mac, she’s about to play a string of UK dates on a massive world tour, the band’s multi-million selling album Rumours has been re-released 35 years after it reached number one, they have an EP of new material, and tonight she premiers her new film, In Your Dreams – a documentary about her solo album of the same name. But she’s famed too, of course, not just for her music, but also for the ‘soap opera’ of drugs, relationships and break-ups that was a backdrop to the music of Fleetwood Mac – and particularly for her difficult romantic relationship and breakup with band member Lindsay Buckingham, which she sang about in her hit song Dreams. Stevie Nicks joins Jane Garvey to discuss being a woman in a very male dominated music world, her tumultuous personal relationships, dealing with addiction, her new documentary, being reunited with bandmate Christine McVie, and her relationship today with ex-partner and guitarist Lindsay Buckingham.

Stevie Nicks’ new documentary film In Your Dreams premiers in London tonight and is available on DVD from November

Fleetwood Mac play Dublin on the 20 September, London on the 24, 25, and 27 September, and followed by arenas in Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow

The re-released deluxe version of Rumours, Stevie’s solo album In Your Dreams, and Fleetwood Mac’s new material, Extended Play, are all out now

Rwandan Elections

At 56 per cent, Rwanda has the highest proportion of female politicians in parliament in the world. Over the next two days the Rwandan people return to the polls. Will women maintain their hold on power? And how much influence do these Members of Parliament actually have? Jane talks Carina Tertsakian, Human Rights Watch and Clotida Umulisa, Chair of Gender for Rwandans in the UK

NHS Fertility Treatment

The average IVF treatment cycle costs around £3,000. Is it something that should be funded by the NHS? In an opinion poll of just over a thousand people by pollsters GFK/NOP for tonight’s Costing The NHS on Radio 4, nearly 50% of people indicated it’s a non-emergency treatment that patients should pay for and not something the NHS should be funding. To discuss the findings, Jane Garvey is joined by Daily Telegraph Columnist Cristina Odone, and by Clare Lewis Jones, the Chief Exec of parent group Infertility Network UK.

Life In The Freezer

The Woman’s Hour drama this week is Life In The Freezer by Al Smith. Based on Al’s own experience of his mother’s death, it follows the grieving members of the Cartwright family as they work their way through a freezer of meals, each tailored to their individual tastes, which their late mother had prepared for them before she died of ovarian cancer. Al joins Jane to discuss the grieving process and the challenges of writing a play based on your own experiences.
