Deserted by her soldier boyfriend, Ann Vickers submerges herself in her social work, volunteering to assist in a notorious women's prison.
When her reforming attitude clashes with the prison governor, she is forced out of the job but is determined to better the lives of the prisoners, which brings her to the attention of Judge Dophin - a married man.
