Memories of Michael: An email from Travelling Folk listener Al Issner

Good evening from a sombre Newport-on-Tay.
Sad news indeed about Michael Marra. I met him a couple of times, and he really was so down to earth that you felt you could speak to him as an equal.
His songs have a touch that makes you associate with them - even if you're not from Dundee. I remember asking him how many people claimed that they were the inspiration for "Hermless" - he just laughed.
He wrote songs about the everyday, the commonplace, and historical events, and gave them all a special significance.
I'm attaching a couple of photos - one of Michael and Hamish McAlpine ("Hamish The Goalie"), and the other is of Michael in playful mood - he was involved in a production with St.John's High in Dundee, called "King of Lochee", where the set included a mock-up of a Dundee landmark, Cox's Stack, which he wanted to pretend to climb.
Regards,
Al
