Bruce Bedford - Black Ice

A gripping account of a 1911 expedition prior to Scott's doomed Antarctic trip. Stars Crawford Logan and Richard Greenwood. From October 1995.

In 1911 - as a prelude to Captain Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole - three men set off in the darkness of the Antarctic winter. Departing from Scott's over-wintering hut, they were out to secure examples of the eggs of the Emperor Penguin.

Their survival, in temperatures of minus 60 or 70, can only be ascribed to astonishing courage and willpower.

Bruce Bedford's dramatised account stars Crawford Logan as Edward A. 'Bill' Wilson, Richard Greenwood as Apsley Cherry-Garrard and John Walsh as Henry R. 'Birdie' Bowers.

Director: Hamish Wilson

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1995.
