Adam Nicolson's grandparents Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson bought Sissinghurst in 1932 and turned it into one of Britain's best-loved gardens.

This is his account of growing up there, and his vision of how to manage its future.

"Sissinghurst is what I am. My nutrients come from the soil; it is the land I have walked over, looked out over, smoked my first cigarette in, planted my first tree in, bicycled over, slept in and lived in all my life."
