Uruguay, winners of the inaugural World Cup on home soil in 1930, needed a play-off win against Costa Rica to book their place in South Africa but they have a potent attack, spearheaded by former Manchester United player Diego Forlan. France, the losing finalists in 2006, also made hard work of qualifying and needed a highly controversial win over the Republic of Ireland in the play-offs to reach the finals.
