Salt City

Allan Beswick discovers the history and future of Britain's last salt mine, 500 feet below the plains of Cheshire. From 2008.

Broadcaster Allan Beswick explores the history of salt mining around Winsford in Cheshire.

Allan visits the Lion Salt Works, speaks with curator Andrew Fielding and learns that the salt deposit was discovered during a search for coal seams.

Zoe Ellis takes Allan on an underground tour where he meets Ron Lightfoot, who runs the subterranean canteen.
