Venus Williams was almost knocked out by Alla Kudryavtseva last year in a nailbiter that saw Williams eventually win 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Seeded players Dominik Hrbatý, Juan Mónaco, Olga Poutchkova, Carlos Moyà and Filippo Volandri all got the chop after meeting with fierce competition.
