New Zealand drama in which an 11-year-old girl challenges the accepted wisdom of her people in a bid to become an elder of her Maori tribe. Though she dearly loves her grandfather, she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to promote what she believes to be her destiny in a staunchly patriarchal society.
