John Osborne - The Entertainer

Three family generations symbolise post-war Britain's decline. Bill Nighy stars as struggling music hall artist Archie Rice.

Bill Nighy stars as Archie Rice, a seedy third-rate comic in a tatty twice-nightly seaside show.

Set in the 1950s, Archie's tragedy mirrors not only a dying music hall, but a dying era, symbolic of the decline of post-war Britain. John Osborne's potent drama was first produced on stage in 1957.

With David Bradley as Billy Rice, Cheryl Campbell as Phoebe Rice, Sarah-Jane Holm as Jean Rice and Bertie Carvel as Frank Rice.

Music directed by Colin Sell with percussionist: Paul Girbow and trumpeter: Phil Revens.

Adapted by John Foley.

Producer: Marion Nancarrow

First broadcast on the BBC World Service in 2004.
