David harks back to the past.

David and Ruth are about to look at the different species in the existing hedges at Brookfield, ready to make their application for a grant, when Jill and Phil arrive. Ruth decides that it would be a better idea to chat to Jill about taking on some extra childcare over the holidays and lets Phil head out with David instead.

Ruth is relieved when Jill agrees to help her with the kids over the holidays. Meanwhile, Phil and David return from examining the hedges, with news of the different species that they have found. David and Ruth are touched when Phil thanks them for working so hard at Brookfield, and for safeguarding the farm into the future.

Kathy is pleased to see work on the shop progressing well. Nigel apologises again for almost injuring her with the digger, but Kathy insists that she's just pleased to have the shop re-fitted. Meanwhile, Elizabeth frets when they lose two volunteer guides at Lower Loxley. It will be a struggle to replace them, so they decide to advertise locally in the hope of attracting some more help.
