Alien Stadium – This One’s For The Humans
To start off the week we started with the brilliant track “This One’s For The Humans” by Alien Stadium – a collaborative project from Beta Band’s Steve Mason and Primal Scream’s Martin Duffy. It’s the first single from Alien Stadium’s mini-album “Livin’ In Elizabethan Times” out on 1st December via Double Six. It’s a concept album about aliens coming down to help humans and then quickly realising that us humans, aren't really worth it. Steve says “when the [aliens] come down…their judgement is not good. They don’t want anything to do with us, they don’t like us and all they really wish is harm on us.” We might not have made the aliens happy but Team Tom were mightily impressed with Alien Stadium’s new single!
We must admit Goat Girl’s new single has a pretty gross title, “Cracker Drool,” but as soon as Team Tom heard the track we absolutely loved it, and could forgive the title. Goat Girl have done it again and made an absolute cracker (pun definitely intended) of a tune. Goat Girl are Clottie Cream (Lottie), Naima Jelly, L.E.D. (Ellie) and Rosy Bones based in South London. They have some superstar fans in the shape of Frank Ocean, who is such a fan he asked some of the members to record tracks on his latest album “Blonde.” And if you, like Frank Ocean, love the sound of Cracker Drool you can catch the ladies live across the UK in November.
To get you through the mid-week blues Team Tom thought we’d get you soundtrack your Wednesday with choral vibes on Young Fathers’ latest single “Lord.” It’s the first music we’ve heard from the Edinburgh trio since their track “Only God Knows” recorded for Danny Boyle's film "Trainspotting 2" last year. “Lord” is definitely a new sound and direction for Young Fathers! If you like the Young Fathers' version of a choir then you can watch them live in March 2018 across the UK.
When we heard that Hookworms were releasing their first new music in three years we immediately had to play it on the show. Even more excitingly it’s the first single from upcoming third album “Microshift” out on 2nd February 2018 via Domino. It's also the first music from lead singer MJ's rebuilt studio “Suburban Home Studio,” after the studio was devastated in the River Aire floods in Leeds in 2015. After a GoFundMe campaign and lots of help from volunteers the band were able to rebuild the studio and record the new album. So it feels even more special to have the opportunity to hear “Negative Space” and play it on the radio.
To finish off the week Team Tom played the brilliant new single “Pulsar” by comeback Kings, Ride. “Pulsar” is the follow up to Ride’s album “Weather Diaries” released earlier this year on Wichita Recordings. Drummer Loz Colbert says the track: “reimagines old organ samples, transmissions from space, effects, heavy beats and pulsing chords… the idea was to come up with some kind of ‘space anthem’ about light, existence, travel and return.” Super producer Erol Alkan produced "Pulsar" and also was on production duties on their 2017 album. “Weather Diaries” was the first music from Ride in over 20 years! We’re very happy they haven’t left it that long to release “Pulsar.”
