Anatomy of a scene from episode 6

Allan dissects a scene for the final episode of The Fall

Jamie performed it brilliantly on the day

This anonymous piece of poetry entered my thoughts when I was feeling my way towards a key moment between Spector and Mark Bailey that would also provide me with Spector's last words, a kind of epitaph. Jamie performed it brilliantly on the day, Conor's response in listening was also perfect: spell-bound and frightened simultaneously, like a predator and his prey.

By signing his journal, Spector acknowledges his own twisted celebrity but it is also a death sentence on Bailey. The piece juxtaposes reason and unreason, rational and irrational thought, method and wildness so effectively. There's a deranged nightmarish quality that seemed to fit Spector's darkening mood, a kind of obsessive causality that made it feel right that he had memorised it at some point in his life.

Overall it reflects his long-standing double life and seems tinged with a kind of sadness and suffering. The resolution is a death sentence on them both. Chilling.
