Will writing
On the programme on 7 January 2026, solicitor Gary Rycroft offered some advice on wills. He says:
- Check the names of executors. For most people there's no reason why it shouldn't be family members or friends. If you have professional executors, get in touch with them and ask them what their charges will be for carrying out the service.
- If you want to change your will to have someone else act as executor, this process can be done using an official legal alteration called a codicil, which should cost around £150.
- It’s possible to have a good, cheap will. For example, some charities run schemes with solicitors that provide free or reduced-rate will-writing in exchange for a donation.
- Always use a regulated provider of legal services when writing a will. This gives you enhanced protection in the event of a problem. You can check if a person or company is regulated at the Solicitors Regulation Authority website.
