What happens when Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and more answer awkward questions from kids?

By Luke Morgan Britton, 1 October 2018

Kids make for perfect interviewers. As Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast host Dev explains: "Children think outside the box."

He’s right: kids don’t live by the same norms, rules and regulations as the rest of us. They are full of intrigue, curiosity and, more crucially, they have absolutely no filter. Who better to ask a bunch of high-profile celebrities some very vital questions, then?

Dev and Alice's Kids Ask does exactly that: sourcing weird, wonderful and often quite awkward queries from young 'uns and posing them to the likes of Margot Robbie, Idris Elba and, most recently, Tom Hardy.

"When we've had big guests on in the past, sometimes there's a list of questions that we're not allowed to ask," Dev explained to Hardy.

“But we've found a perfect loophole to get around this… we get kids to ask some of the big, pressing questions, that way, if a guest doesn’t answer, it means they hate children.”

So, how did Tom Hardy and his fellow celebs fare? Find out below.

The great thing about Kids Ask is that you never know what type of questions you’re going to get. Venom star Hardy, for example, was asked everything from what’s the naughtiest thing he’s ever done (he was keeping particularly schtum about that one) to which kind of snack he’d be (“I’d be a bag of Twiglets - you either love me or you hate me.")

But things also got quite philosophical, especially when Tom was asked if he likes goldfish more than humans. “All sentient beings are important, so I don’t think you can love one thing more than the other,” Hardy mused. “We can see ourselves in all living things. You have to care about every [being] and approach it with love. Unless it attacks you, in which case, lovingly see it off with a big stick. Love all things - unless it’s coming at you, mate.” Great advice from Tom.

Hardy also got quizzed on how he got in - physically in - the TV. Watch Tom Hardy's full Kids Ask appearance in the video above to find out more and listen back below.

Tom Hardy faces tough questions in Kids Ask!

Tom Hardy is put to the test as a bunch of kids innocently ask him difficult questions.

There are things most of us want to know about Idris Elba. Is he going to be the next James Bond? What was it like playing both Nelson Mandela and the tiger in The Jungle Book? And more simply put, how is he so effortlessly cool?

Kids though, they were more interested to know how many TV sets he owns (three, if you were also curious…) and what kind of animal he would be (a lion).

Our young interviewers also sought Elba's tips on financial investments. “I think the best way to invest your money is to loan it to your parents with interest,” Idris recommended. “They might go for that deal.” And what’s the best way of enforcing such a loan? “Definitely throw tantrums.”

The questions got quite personal, too, with Elba asked whether he had ever broken wind in public. “The short answer is yes,” Idris - ever the good sport - admitted. “It’s standard behaviour. I was in the lift coming up here, there was 16 people in it and someone guffed… I definitely didn’t own up.”

Overall, Idris was wholeheartedly in favour of Kids Ask. “These questions are important,” he said. “The truth is definitely needed.”

Margot Robbie is one of Hollywood's most sought-after stars, having wowed us with her portrayals of Harley Quinn and Tonya Harding in recent years, but what did our kid reporters manage to uncover about the Aussie native?

Well, we certainly got to know Margot a little better. Now we know just how many push-ups she can do ("only three in a row"), what dog breed she’d be ("I’d definitely be a mutt”) and who’s the “hunkiest” man she’s ever worked with is (obviously Robbie opted for her husband, after the couple met on the set of 2015’s Suite Française, or that would have been more than a little awkward...)

The kids also drilled Robbie on her concerns about the Brexit negotiations. “It’s my first interview of the day and we’re talking politics, which is terrifying,” Margot protested. “Let me warm up a bit, let’s talk about dog breeds again… please!”

Actors tend get asked the same questions about their film careers, but kids do things a little differently. They wanted to know exactly how Ewan McGregor prepared for the role of a candlestick (after playing Lumière in Beauty and the Beast, of course) and whether Winnie The Pooh would be a good Jedi ("He could easily have a lightsaber up his red jumper," Ewan argued).

We also got to know what McGregor’s favourite taco filling is, as well as Ewan’s thoughts on the afterlife: "I'll be with all my pets that have passed away, all my relations, loved ones and friends - that's what's going to happen... I think it'll be alright".

Who would win in a fight: Marvel's Black Panther or a real black panther? It's the question on everyone’s lips, or at least in the minds of our kids interviewing Daniel Kaluuya. “Black Panther, because he can absorb pain" was Daniel’s response to the question, with the star reasoning: “Stamina, distance: think about it.”

After revealing his favourite colour (red for his favourite footy team, Arsenal), Daniel encountered a couple of tricky ones. Firstly, whether or not he’s rich. “I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t with this question,” Kaluuya answered, in between bursts of nervous laughter.

And what will the effects of global warming be on the future generation? He may not be a scientist or climate change expert, but - like McGregor's thoughts on the afterlife - Daniel’s ever the optimist. “I think you’ll be alright. It’ll be alright,” he calmly predicted. There we have it!
