Four young trainees

One life-changing journey through Scotland’s biggest hair academy

Binky

In her own words

I joined the academy in 2013. I’d always been interested in hair and I would flick through magazines admiring the hairstyles more than I would the clothes — that’s when I decided a career in hairdressing was for me.

My role model is my Uncle Gerry. He’s always made a conscious effort to make sure that he has the career that he wanted and he’s always moving forward in his career

The most exciting thing about my job is working on photoshoots and all the cool places that I get to go to assist the stylists.

Austin

In his own words

My role model is my Salon Director Wil. He’s a huge influence on my career and I’d like to follow in his footsteps

I’ve always had a fascination with hair, I used to practise constantly on my friends and family before a family friend, whose daughter was training with Rainbow Room International, suggested that I followed hairdressing as a career path. She spoke very highly of her daughter’s experience which pushed me to go for it.

Angel

In her own words

I come from a family of hairdressers, so for me I’ve never really thought of another career choice. When I was little I used to practise on my doll’s head, so it seemed like the obvious career choice. I’ve been with the company since I was fourteen. I started as a Saturday girl and I’ve been with them ever since. As soon as I turned 16, I couldn’t wait to be taken on full-time.

The best thing about my job is the impact that I can have on my clients. They come in to the salon feeling like Cinderella and leave looking and feeling like a million dollars

The highlight of my career has to be winning the Hairdressing Council’s Student of the Year at Salon International in October.

Alijah

In her own words

I’ve been with Rainbow Room International for two years and what a crazy two years they’ve been! Rainbow Room International is such a diverse company and their reputation for training was what initially attracted me to the company. The best thing about a career in hairdressing is that it’s not your average 9-5 job: you’re constantly being challenged and educated.

Hairdressing allows me to unleash my creativity and make my clients feel better about themselves.

In the future I’d really like to build up my clientele in the salon and combine this with working on hair shows and photoshoots overseas.
