5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 24 November

Every day we play you a track that has just grabbed our attention. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, other times, it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's choice selection. Léyya – Drumsolo
This was released last Friday and will feature on the Viennese duo’s second album Sauna, due on the 26th January. We hammered their debut single Superego - taken from 2016’s Spanish Disco Deluxe (which won the Amadeus Music Award – the Austrian equivalent of the Mercury Prize). They say: “We have worked truly hard the last two years. We exactly knew what we wanted the album to sound like and made hundreds of sketches we deleted afterwards, just to translate the exact ideas we had in our heads into these final songs. We are extremely happy with the result and we can't wait for you to hear it!”

Sampa The Great – Flowers
Sampa Tembo is an Australia-based, Zambia-born, Botswana-raised singer-songwriter who expresses herself through music, poetry and visual art. Her music first appeared online by way of 2015’s The Great Mixtape and she’s signed to Big Dada to release new album Birds and The BEE9. We would thoroughly recommend that you spend some time with it. Having lived in both Sydney and Melbourne, Sampa's also spent time studying in both San Francisco and LA, and the diverse influences on this record audibly reflect her cosmopolitan perspective.

The Staves – Silent Side
Our midweek music came from English trio The Staves - Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor - and the NYC–based ensemble yMusic (featuring violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute and trumpet). After being commissioned in 2016 by Justin Vernon’s Eaux Claires Festival (that's Mr Bon Iver) to collaborate on a live performance piece, The Staves delved into yMusic’s catalogue of contemporary classical compositions to find pieces suited to their lyrics and vocals. This performance led to an album, The Way Is Read, which is out today on Nonesuch.

Barry Adamson - Sweet Misery (Ben de Vries Remix)
We’ve been loving the remix of I Got Clothes by A Certain Ratio and decided to pick another track from the Love Sick [rude work] Remixed EP (you can probably work out the missing word). The self-taught musician rose to prominence as the bass player in Magazine, followed by a three-year stint with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and solo work that includes scores for film, TV and ballet. Sweet Misery was released earlier this year, and this remix is by producer/songwriter/composer, Ben de Vries (AKA Lunacre).

Hidden Orchestra - Stone (Matthew Herbert’s Spring Dub)
This is taken from the latest release by Hidden Orchestra which will come out in January, on the Tru Thoughts label. It features re-workings of Dawn Chorus, which came out back in June. Others in the mix include Max Cooper, Throwing Snow, The Physics House Band, Nostalgia 77, Skalpel, and former Desert Island Disco-er Wrongtom. This one’s a Matthew Herbert Spring Dub, to brighten up Winter. You’re welcome.
