5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 17 November

Every day we play you a track that has just grabbed our attention. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, other times, it'll be a brand new artist. Here's this week's choice selection. Just hit the links to see the full Just Added playlist:

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Deadly Valentine (Soulwax Remix)
Gainsbourg remixed by Soulwax, with some cowbell? Yep, we are into that. This track was released over the weekend, to get everyone a little more psyched about the release of Charlotte’s new album, Rest. It’s moody and gorgeous: a great song re-worked to perfection by those Belgian beat lords. We’ll be dancing, whilst simultaneously affecting a pose of stylish Gallic nonchalance.

Joan As Policewoman – Warning Bell
This new song from Joan Wasser beautifully strips things back to bare-all lyrics about “being a romantic and the naiveté that goes along with it.” Prone to trusting the villain and looking the wrong way, Joan’s repeated refrain that she never sees it coming is both heartfelt and a little heart-breaking. But Joan is a badass: “My maxim is: if it feels scary to say it, it’s the thing you must say”.

Björk – Blissing Me
This appeared online on Wednesday morning, it follows first single The Gate, and precedes the arrival of Utopia next Friday (we wish that sentence referred to more than just an album). It’s appropriately named, with otherworldy vocals, and gorgeous harp-like strings underneath. But the story of a burgeoning relationship between “two music nerds” who bond over "sending each other MP3s” is, unsurprisingly, not a straightforward one. Be sure to tune in to the 6 Music Morning Show next Tuesday (21st November) when Björk will be chatting to Lauren.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – The Fourth Colour
The antipodean over-achievers released their fourth album to the world on Thursday evening. Not only is it NOT their final LP of the year but this one’s FREE with, as far as we can see, absolutely no catches. To quote the band: “You will have the option of downloading the following files completely free of charge with no email signup, no commitment, no catch. FREE. FREE. FREE.” This ten-track album’s called Polygondwanaland, which is up there with Flying Mircrotonal Banana for the best-named Lizard Wizard LPs of 2017.

Talib Kweli feat. Anderson Paak – Travelling Light
The Brooklyn-born rapper released his EP Radio Silence this morning so we went with this track, which features Anderson Paak, not to mention production by Kaytranada. Talib describes Paak as an “old soul” who “reminds me of when I first heard Cee-Lo Green. You know, when you first heard Cee-Lo Green, you think you’re listening to a 60-year old black man who’s weathered and wrinkled, like he’s lived some experiences."
